The Dangers of Radon

According to the EPA Radon causes about 21000 deaths per year. It is the second leading cause of lung cancer only behind smoking cigarettes. And if you are a smoker and have an exposure to Radon your chances of getting lung cancer almost double.

Radon is a radioactive gas that comes from the ground, from the breakdown of Uranium. It is colorless, odorless and tasteless and can only be detected by specialized tests. Radon then decays into other Radioactive decay products which release energy which are known to cause Lung Cancer.

Testing your home for Radon is something that is highly recommended by The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). Some Areas have a higher potential to contain Radon then others but it is strongly recommended that all homes be tested for Radon.

As you can see Radon is everywhere and I recommend all homes be tested for Radon. It is estimated that 1 out of every 15 homes have elevated levels of Radon in the home. Once it is determined that a home has an elevated Radon level, It is not the end of the world. A mitigation system can be installed. It is also recommended that if your home does have a mitigation system installed that you test your home every two years to be sure the system is functioning properly.

If you are buying a new home, be sure to contact Precision Property Inspections LLC. To not only test your home for Radon but to provide a full, detailed Home Inspection. If your home has a mitigation system already installed Contact Precision Every two years so we can assure you that your home is safe and working properly.
